Saint Mark
Saint Mark the Apostle was born in Cyrene (Tripolis), one of the Five Western Cities in North Africa, to a father named Aristobulus and a mother named Mary. His parents were Israelites, honorable and wealthy, and taught him both Greek and Hebrew literature. He was called Mark after his parents moved to Jerusalem, where Peter, the disciple of Christ, lived. Since Peter was married to the cousin of Aristobulus, Mark often visited his house and learned the teachings of the Lord there.
Once, while Aristobulus and Mark were walking near the Jordan River, a lion and a lioness appeared before them roaring fiercely. Aristobulus, fearing death, told his son to flee. But Mark said, “Do not fear, my father, for the Christ in whom I believe will save us.” He then cried to the beasts, “Jesus Christ, the Son of the living God, commands you to perish and vanish from this mountain.” Immediately they split apart and died. His father, astonished, asked him about Christ; Mark taught him, and he believed and was baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.
After the Ascension of the Lord, Mark accompanied Paul and Barnabas preaching the Gospel in many cities. After Barnabas’s departure, the Lord commanded Mark to go to Africa and the Pentapolis, where many believed through him. From there he came to Alexandria in the month of Bashans, year 61 A.D. As he entered the city, the strap of his sandal broke. At the gate was a shoemaker named Anianus. While repairing it, the awl pierced his finger, and he cried in Greek, “Is Theos!” (O One God!). Saint Mark said, “Do you know God?” He replied, “We speak His name but do not know Him.” The saint spat on the dust, placed it on the wound, and it was healed instantly. Mark then taught him about the creation, the fall, the flood, the law of Moses, and the prophecies of Christ. Anianus brought him home, gathered his family, and all were baptized in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Mark ordained Anianus bishop, with three priests and seven deacons, then went to the Pentapolis for two years, preaching and ordaining clergy. When he returned to Alexandria, he found the believers multiplied and a church built at Boukalia, east of the city by the sea.
While celebrating the Feast of the Passover on 29 Baramouda, 68 A.D., the pagans were celebrating for their idol Serapis. They came from their temple, seized the saint, tied a rope around his neck, and dragged him through the streets, crying, “Drag the bull to the cattle yard!” His flesh was torn, and the ground was covered with his blood. In the evening they put him in prison. The angel of the Lord appeared to him, saying, “Rejoice, Mark, servant of God; your name is written in the Book of Life and numbered among the saints.” Then the Lord Jesus appeared and gave him peace.
The next morning, 30 Baramouda, they dragged him again until he departed in peace. When they lit a great fire to burn him, earthquakes, thunder, and heavy rain terrified the pagans, who fled. The believers took his holy body, wrapped it, prayed over it, and placed it secretly in the church they had built.
The prayers of this great and honorable apostle, Saint Mark the Evangelist, be with us all. Glory to our Lord forever. Amen.
ولد القديس مرقس الرسول في ترنابوليس (من الخمس مدن الغربية بشمال أفريقيا) من أب اسمه أرسطو بولس وأم أسمها مريم. إسرائيلي المذهب وذي يسار وجاه عريض، فعلماه وهذباه بالآداب اليونانية والعبرانية ولقب بمرقس بعد نزوح والديه إلى أورشليم حيث كان بطرس قد تتلمذ للسيد المسيح. ولأن بطرس كان متزوجا بابنة عم أرسطو بولس فكان مرقس يتردد على بيته كثيرا ومنه درس التعاليم المسيحية
وحدث أن أرسطو بولس وولده مرقس كانا يسيران بالقرب من الأردن وخرج عليهما أسد ولبؤة وهما يزمجران فخاف أبوه وأيقن بالهلاك ودفعته الشفقة على ولده أن يأمره بالهروب للنجاة بنفسه ولكن مرقس طمأنه قائلا لا تخف يا أبي فالمسيح الذي أنا مؤمن به ينجينا منهما. ولما اقتربا منهما صاح بهما القديس قائلا "السيد المسيح ابن الله الحي يأمركما أن تنشقا وينقطع جنسكما من هذا الجبل " فانشقا ووقعا على الأرض مائتين فتعجب والده وطلب من ابنه أن يعرفه عن المسيح فأرشده إلى ذلك وآمن والده وعمده بالسيد المسيح له المجد
وبعد صعود السيد المسيح استصحبه بولس وبرنابا للبشارة بالإنجيل في عدة مدن
وبعد نياحة برنابا ذهب مرقس بأمر السيد المسيح إلى أفريقية وبرقة والخمس المدن الغربية. ونادي في تلك الجهات بالإنجيل فآمن على يده أكثر أهلها. ومن هناك ذهب إلى الإسكندرية في أول بشنس سنة 61 م. وعندما دخل المدينة انقطع حذاؤه وكان عند الباب إسكافي أسمه إنيانوس، فقدم له الحذاء وفيما هو قائم بتصليحه جرح المخراز إصبعه فصاح من الألم وقال باليونانية " اس ثيؤس" (يا الله الواحد) فقال له القديس مرقس: "هل تعرفون الله؟ " فقال " لا وإنما ندعو باسمه ولا نعرفه". فتفل على التراب ووضع على الجرح فشفي للحال، ثم أخذ يشرح له من بدء ما خلق الله السماء والأرض فمخالفة آدم ومجيء الطوفان إلى إرسال موسى وإخراج بني إسرائيل من مصر وإعطائهم الشريعة وسبي بابل ثم سرد له نبوات الأنبياء الشاهدة بمجيء المسيح فدعاه إلى بيته وأحضر له أولاده فوعظهم جميعا وعمدهم باسم الأب والابن والروح القدس.
فرسم إنيانوس أسقفا وثلاثة قسوس وسبعة شمامسة ثم سافر إلى الخمس المدن الغربية وأقام هناك سنتين يبشر ويرسم أساقفة وقسوسًا وشمامسة.
وعاد إلى الإسكندرية فوجد المؤمنين قد ازدادوا وبنوا لهم كنيسة في الموضع المعروف ببوكوليا (دار البقر) شرقي الإسكندرية على شاطئ البحر وحدث وهو يحتفل بعيد الفصح يوم تسعة وعشرين برمودة سنة 68 م. وكان الوثنيون في اليوم نفسه يعيدون لألههم سرابيس، أنهم خرجوا من معبدهم إلى حيث القديس قبضوا عليه وطوقوا عنقه بحبل وكانوا يسحبونه وهم يصيحون "جروا الثور في دار البقر" فتناثر لحمه وتلطخت أرض المدينة من دمه المقدس وفي المساء أودعوه السجن فظهر له ملاك الرب وقال له "افرح يا مرقس عبد الإله، هودا اسمك قد كتب في سفر الحياة وقد حسبت ضمن جماعة القديسين". وتواري عنه الملاك ثم ظهر له السيد المسيح وأعطاه السلام فابتهجت نفسه وتهللت"
وفي اليوم التالي (30 برمودة) أخرجوه من السجن وأعادوا سحبه في المدينة حتى أسلم روحه الطاهرة ولما أضرموا نارا عظيمة لحرقه حدثت زلازل ورعود وبروق وهطلت أمطار غزيرة فارتاع الوثنيون وولوا مذعورين. وأخذ المؤمنون جسده المقدس إلى الكنيسة التي شيدوها وكفنوه وصلوا عليه وجعلوه في تابوت ووضعوه في مكان خفي من هذه الكنيسة.
صلاة هذا القديس العظيم والكاروز الكريم تكون معنا ولربنا المجد دائمًا. آمين".

Hail to you Saint Mark, The son of Aristopolos,

You came to Palestine, The land of the saints,

You followed the Lord Jesus, You drank from the spring,

Mark and his father found Two lions walking,
You prayed and they died, Markos pi-apostolos.
Saint Mary your mother made her house a church,
She served a great service, Markos pi-apostolos.
Jesus was far away, sent to you, wanting,
To celebrate the Passover, Markos pi-apostolos.
Our great Lord made the last Passover,
He was patient to the wicked, Markos pi-apostolos.
You followed Him to the garden, the youth took hold of you,
You escaped from them naked, Markos pi-apostolos.
You know the mysteries of the mighty God,
Through them, the righteous is saved, Markos pi-apostolos.
The Spirit of comfort dwelt upon those who gathered,
In your house on Pentecost, Markos pi-apostolos.
Like tongues of fire in broad daylight,
Settling on the pure ones, Markos pi-apostolos.
You spoke with the tongues of the people of the world,
While performing signs, Markos pi-apostolos.
The nations came to you, submitting to you,
Believing in the Lord Jesus, Markos pi-apostolos.
Three thousands were baptized, led by your guidance,
Living in chastity, Markos pi-apostolos.
After the Pentecost, you went away to preach,
To the whole world, Markos pi-apostolos.
O Mark our father, the love that came to us,
To the faith he led us, Markos pi-apostolos.
When you heard Anianus proclaiming, “O one God,”
You showed him Christ’s way, Markos pi-apostolos.
You ordained Anianus A bishop with priests,
To serve the souls, Markos pi-apostolos.
You established the school of theology,
The first seminary, Markos pi-apostolos.
The fathers came out of it, patriarchs and scholars,
They kept the faith with blood, Markos pi-apostolos.
Your virtues increased, the Spirit inspired you,
To write your gospel, Markos pi-apostolos.
You wrote to the Romans and all the sons of men,
About the King and Judge, Markos pi-apostolos.
You completed the strife with the blood of martyrdom,
At the appointed time, Markos pi-apostolos.
On the day of the feast the people dragged you,

God sent from heaven clouds carrying water,

To remember the martyrdom of Markos pi-apostolos.
